Rescue on the Hudson River: Man in critical condition after jumping into the water

MANHATTAN, New York (WABC) — A dramatic rescue operation took place in Manhattan on Thursday after a person jumped into the Hudson River.

NYPD officials say a man, approximately 18 years old, jumped over a railing at Pier 76 near 34th Street and 12th Avenue shortly before 4 p.m.

They say the victim immediately started screaming for help.

According to police, the NYPD’s dive and flight unit was on its way to the scene.

Two divers jumped into the water and desperately searched the river for the victim while New York Fire Department rescue boats were operating nearby.

After about 15 minutes, divers found the victim and brought him to a waiting New York Police Department boat, which took him to shore and eventually to an ambulance.

According to the New York Police Department, the victim was taken to Mount Sinai West in critical condition.

There is no information yet about what caused him to jump into the water.

The investigation is ongoing.
