Madison Middle School football player dies one day after injury during practice

MADISON, W.Va. — A Madison Middle School football player died Saturday of Injuries sustained during training on Friday.

Cohen Craddock was 13 and in 8th grade.

“Today we are all Madison Middle School Redhawks and our hearts are heavy with the unimaginable loss of a bright young athlete in our community,” the Boone County Sheriff’s Department posted on Facebook.

“We ask that you please keep the young man’s family, friends, coaches, teammates, teachers and rescue team in mind and pray for him during this incredibly difficult time. It is heartbreaking to lose someone at such a young age and our entire community feels the weight of this loss.

“It has been a tough few months for our community as we have suffered the tragic loss of several young men.”

Football teams from across the state began sharing their condolences on social media Saturday night.

The Midland Trail High School team asked for prayers for Craddock’s family and friends.

“We know how painful it is to lose a player. Today, Patriot Nation mourns with you. We pray for you.”

Roane County High, which suffered a similar loss in recent years, also called for prayers.

“Roane County is praying together. WE know how painful it is to lose a player. Pray for his family, pray for his teammates and coaches, pray for his classmates and friends, and pray for his community,” the post said.

The Nitro High School football team posted a message with a similar appeal for support for the Madison community, which is suffering “unimaginable pain and heartbreaking loss.”

Boone County school officials said counselors will be at Madison Middle School on Monday.
