Prefabricated houses a cost-effective solution: Naleba – FBC News

Government intervention will enable more prefabricated houses to be built to meet the country’s housing needs.

This was highlighted by the Director General of the Public Rental Board, Timoci Naleba.

Naleba says prefab homes can significantly reduce construction costs, time and labor.

Prefabricated building materials are building materials manufactured in sections that can be assembled on site and reused in different parts of a project.

Prefabricated materials were introduced to Fiji in the early 1980s, but this construction option met with little response.

“The government’s idea of offering prefabricated houses is timely. I say this because the cost of construction in most of our Fiji islands is quite high, sometimes very high, and the cost of materials for construction companies is also high.”

The Director General of the Public Rental Board appreciates the Government’s efforts to explore new housing construction options.

Naleba says the prefab home built as a model home meets Fiji’s cyclone standards.

Meanwhile, the government announced in the 2024-2025 state budget that the import duty on prefabricated materials would be reduced from 32 percent to 5 percent starting earlier this month.
