Second South Alabama football player dies in just over a week

SELMA, Alabama (WTVY) – For the second time in less than a week, an Alabama high school football player collapsed during a medical attack Friday.

Michael McLendon, executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association, said in a statement that Caden Tellier, a player at Morgan Academy, suffered a brain injury.

The Morgan Academy confirmed to Gray station WSFA that Caden Tellier died Saturday afternoon.

The exact nature of the injury is not precise.

McLendon said Morgan Academy in Selma, Alabama, suspended all school activities this week to give the community time to come together.

“We ask our entire AISA family and the people of Alabama to join us in praying for peace and comfort for Caden’s family and the Morgan Academy community as they navigate this difficult time,” McLendon said.

Fourteen-year-old Semaj Wilkins, a player at New Brockton High School, died on August 13 after collapsing during a preseason practice.

The cause of death remains under investigation.
