17-year-old girl killed in tornado in Tallahassee, second known death from storm

A 17-year-old girl was killed last Friday in northern Florida when a severe storm brought tornadoes and winds of up to 1,000 degrees, authorities said Thursday. It is the second confirmed weather-related death in the state.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the victim died in Leon County, the state capital of Tallahassee. Authorities did not release her name or the circumstances of her death, according to The Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The Democrat reported that it had been alerted to the teenager’s death by a reader who had stated that the teenager had been seriously injured when a tree fell on her in a wooded area and had later died.

On Wednesday, the Democrat reported on the death of the other storm victim, 47-year-old Carolyn Benton, who died last week when a tree fell on her mobile home in the same district.

About 4 miles east of downtown Tallahassee, a tree fell on a woman

Leon County Emergency Services responded to a residential area about 4 miles east of downtown Tallahassee around 7:30 a.m. on May 10, the county reported.

Officials said they found a tree on top of a woman and took her to a hospital.

Officials at the hospital where the girl was taken estimated that fewer than 10 patients were being treated for storm-related injuries and trauma from fallen trees and car accidents, as well as health complications.

More than 100,000 electric customers in Leon County were without power during the storms.

“High risk” of excessive rainfall in neighboring countries on Friday

The fatalities came before severe storms hit Texas on Thursday night, killing four people, knocking out power to more than a million people and dumping heavy rain on a region already flooded by recent storms.

A tornado warning moved east with the storms, moving from Texas to southern Louisiana as strong storms moved through the area. Flood warnings or heavy rainfall warnings were in effect in Mississippi and Alabama and as far east as the Florida Panhandle.

The National Weather Service had warned of a “high risk” of excessive rainfall along the Texas-Louisiana border through Friday morning.
