After finishing eighth in qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday, Alex Albon had his time cancelled after it was found that “the floorboard was outside the prescribed volume referred to in article 3.5.1 a),” according to the FIA F1 Technical Delegate. Jo Bauer’s report to the sports commissioners.

Albon and a team representative were called to the race stewards at 6:30 p.m. local time.

The Williams team submitted its own measurements, which were within the framework set out in Article 3.5.1(a), but did not contest the measurements submitted by the FIA.

At 19:55 it was announced that the race director would consider the measurement taken with the FIA system in the Parc Fermé as the “relevant” one and would impose a penalty.

Albon’s eighth place in qualifying was the best performance of the two Williams drivers all year.

According to the Williams report, Albon praised the updates made during the summer break and explained why he was able to exceed expectations in qualifying on Saturday.

“I’m really happy with P8 and that our upgrades helped us secure that position,” said Alex.

Albon’s qualifying was seen as a high point after Logan Sargeant hit a low point in his third free practice session and then bounced back. The teammates will now start alongside each other at the back of the field as Albon was disqualified and Sargeant failed to set a time in qualifying.

The only other qualifying penalty was for Lewis Hamilton, who was found guilty of impeding Sergio Perez in Q1 and received a three-place grid penalty. Hamilton surprisingly failed to progress from Q2 and started 12th on Sunday; with his penalty he will now start 15th.
