The faltering Redbirds are nearing the end of their opportunity to appear on national networks.

Fox is expected to broadcast the Cardinals-Dodgers game on Saturday night in 91% of the United States, a contest that has been a staple on the network’s schedule since last spring (the rest of the country will broadcast Cleveland-Milwaukee).

Former Cards pitcher Adam Wainwright will serve as an analyst, joining live commentator Jason Benetti and reporter Ken Rosenthal for the game at Busch Stadium, which begins at 6:15 p.m. and airs locally on KTVI (Channel 2). It will be their last scheduled appearance of the season on Fox’s Saturday night schedule.

Other networks that pick up games on the fly are wary of the Redbirds, who are in freefall as the season draws to a close.

Two weekends ago they were guests on ESPN’s flagship Sunday Night Baseball, their third appearance of the year, and Rick Mace, the network’s director of programming and acquisitions, said there was a good chance they would be back this season.

But the Cards have been in a slump since then. That night’s loss began a stretch in which they went 3-7 and their playoff hopes faded by the day. Since that night, ESPN has filled all but two of its remaining Sunday night slots without calling the Cardinals. And given their decline, ESPN seems to have little reason to put them on the schedule, although there is a slim chance when they face American League postseason contenders Seattle (Sept. 8) and Cleveland (Sept. 22).

Apple TV+ streams MLB doubleheaders on Fridays all season, but the Cards aren’t on the recently released September schedule, so their last appearance in that package will be next Friday night when they play the Twins in Minneapolis.

Upcoming attractions

“Media Views” will not be broadcast for the next few weeks, but there will be a few things that may be of interest to some readers during this time.

One week from August 24th, at 10 p.m., KPLR (Channel 11) will show the St. Louis Derby – the showpiece race of the season at FanDuel Sportsbook and Horse Racing, which most people still call Fairmount Park in Collinsville.

The next day, Channel 11 will air American Underdog at 8 p.m., the film that chronicles the rags-to-riches career of former St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner.

City SC will make its final appearance of the MLS season on a “traditional” television network on September 1, a Sunday, in its home game against Los Angeles Galaxy at 1:45 p.m. Most MLS games are streamed exclusively by Apple, but this one will also be available on Fox (local channel 2).
