Thousands of residents served by the Glace Bay Water Treatment Plant are being asked to use water only when necessary while broken water mains are being repaired.

An emergency alert issued at 12:30pm on Saturday said the outage affected Glace Bay, Dominion, Reserve Mines, Birch Grove, Port Morien, Donkin and Tower Road.

CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall said there have been two water main bursts in the past two days. She said both breaks have been located and repairs are underway.

MaDougall said there is no estimated time for the repairs to be completed. She said right now, water conservation is the priority.

“We don’t want it to get to the point where there is no access to water,” she said. “That’s why protection at this point is so important.”

She said residents and businesses had been advised that water discoloration was to be expected and water pressure could be low.
