From expensive transfers to bargain deals, activating clever buy-back clauses and multi-club deals, there have been a variety of ways in which Premier League teams have strengthened themselves this summer. And many clubs are looking a lot stronger, especially with the move of some key attacking players.

Below we list the top ten Premier League signings of the summer so far. We will update this list in the final days of the summer transfer window.

The 10 best Premier League signings of the summer

10. Savinho (from Troyes to Manchester City)

Wears the number 26 shirt because he wants to emulate Riyad Mahrez at Man City and he definitely plays like him. Signed from City Football Group in 2022, Savinho has played at both Girona and Troyes. The Brazilian winger is confident and sharp on the ball and likes to cut inside from the right flank. At just 20 years old, Savinho shone in La Liga last season when he helped Girona qualify for the Champions League and he is a gem honed on the CFG assembly line.

9. Ben Brereton Diaz (Villarreal to Southampton)

How could Southampton sign Chilean international striker Ben Brereton Diaz for just $9 million? It could prove to be a real bargain, as 25-year-old Brereton Diaz was excellent during his loan spell at Sheffield United in the second half of last season. He scored six goals in 14 games for the struggling Blades and in the Saints’ free-flowing system he has the freedom to move forward from the left and he already scored one of his trademark curling shots against Lazio in preseason. A bargain.

8. Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna to Manchester United)

At just 23, the Dutch international striker worked his way up through Bayern Munich’s academy to the first team, but last season was his breakthrough. He spearheaded Bolgona’s remarkable Champions League qualification with 11 goals in Serie A and, while it’s a big step up, he fits the profile of the player United are looking for. Zirkzee is young, flexible and hungry for goals. He can play in many roles in the attacking line, often dropping back and bringing both creativity and directness to Erik ten Hag’s attack. 7. Daichi Kamada (Lazio to Crystal Palace)

What a bargain the Japanese playmaker is on a free transfer. Kamada, 28, is the direct replacement for Michael Olise and he joins his former boss at Eintracht Frankfurt, Oliver Glasner. Crystal Palace have a solid system for Kamada as he will play as one of the two number 10s alongside Eberechi Eze. Kamada scored in Palace’s 1-1 draw with Nantes to end pre-season, having been around all summer to settle in.

6. Pedro Neto (Wolves to Chelsea)

OK, $70 million is a lot of money for Pedro Neto considering his injury history, but the only reason he’s sixth in our rankings is because of his injury history. The Portuguese winger is basically unstoppable when he gets going, and he’s the Eden Hazard carbon copy that Chelsea fans have been wanting for years. Neto, 24, is an incredible talent, and if he stays fit, he can become one of the best wingers in Europe.

5. Max Kliman (Wolves to West Ham)

Despite the $52 million price tag, this isn’t a spectacular transfer, but he will be hugely important to West Ham’s rebuild. Kilman, 27, played the best football of his career under Julen Lopetegui at Wolves, and when the Spanish coach showed up at West Ham this summer, the first thing he did was sign the English centre-back. Calm on the ball, aggressive in tackling and in the air, and quick to cut back to recover, Kilman is so comfortable in a back three or four that he’s sure to be called up to the England national team soon. As Wolves captain, he’s become a real leader, and even though Jarrod Bowen is West Ham’s new captain, Kilman will be a strong voice in the dressing room.

4. Fabio Carvalho (Liverpool to Brentford)

So many teams wanted to sign Carvalho when it became clear Liverpool were willing to let the young playmaker go. Brentford won the race, spending $35 million. Carvalho failed to make an impact at Liverpool but has had a good pre-season with the Reds and was brilliant on loan in the Championship with Hull City last season. The 21-year-old has plenty of experience under his belt, having broken through at the age of 16 at Brentford’s west London rivals Fulham after coming through their academy. Now back in west London, he will be tasked with leading the Bees’ attacks from a central attacking midfield position with Mbeumo, Wissa and Schade in front of him. He is a very direct dribbler, has an eye for passes and is composed when given a chance.

3. Riccardo Calafiori (Bologna to Arsenal)

When the Gunners need a player, they get him and Calafiori ticked all of Mikel Arteta’s boxes to take them to the next level. The elegant left-footed defender can play at left-back or centre-back and was a star for Bologna last season. He was also the bright spot in Italy’s poor Euro campaign this summer, with 22-year-old Calafiori comfortable stepping out of defence with the ball and so confident in possession. Just as City basically play with four centre-backs and no full-backs, it seems Arsenal will do the same with Calafiori and Ben White at left-back and right-back respectively, and both will move into central midfield when Arsenal have the ball. Calafiori’s superior long-range passing ability adds an extra layer to the Gunners’ game that could be crucial in the title fight.

2. Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth to Tottenham)

Many people will raise their eyebrows when they think about the $70 million Tottenham paid Bournemouth for Solanke (the amount could rise to $83 million). But Solanke was already on the rise last season. The 26-year-old scored 19 goals for Bournemouth in the Premier League and it was his breakthrough season. He has always had all the tools to be a top striker in the Premier League, which is why Liverpool signed him from Chelsea in 2017 and why Bournemouth spent big on Solanke in January 2019. Spurs’ style of play will suit Solanke perfectly, as he will work the channels and pick up passes from Werner, Son, Kulusevski and Maddison behind. He is also a real presence and can break up play to give Spurs a different dimension, something they have not had since the departure of Harry Kane.

1. Niclas Fullkrug (from Borussia Dortmund to West Ham)

Speaking of delaying play, Füllkrug is one of the best in Europe at it and now he’s playing in the Premier League. His fine seasons for Borussia Dortmund and Germany earned him a surprise move to West Ham and the east London club must be applauded for their audacity in pulling off the deal. Füllkrug, 31, scored 15 goals for Dortmund last season (including some important goals in the Champions League) and has scored 13 goals in 21 games for Germany over the past two years. He’s perfect for West Ham, who will be getting crosses galore, and Füllkrug has already admitted that his mouth waters at the thought of Ward-Prowse, Summerville, Bowen and Paqueta putting in crosses for him to finish. He’s a supreme talent in the air and at finishing crosses into the box and although David Moyes has left, West Ham will still play a very similar style under Lopetegui. Add to that the summer signings of winger Summerville, full-back Wan-Bissaka and centre-back Kilman, and Fullkrug’s arrival is the icing on the cake of a great summer transfer window for the Hammers. They have put Declan Rice’s money from last summer to good use and Fullkrug should score at least 15 goals in the Premier League.
