According to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, emergency crews were called to the Mississippi River because a man jumped into the water near the lock gate at the corner of Themis and Water Street.

Firefighters rushed to the Red Star Boat Ramp and the river bank. Riverside crews attempted to rescue the man from the bank.

Rescue crews said they found the man in the river, clinging to a log floating downstream about 30 metres from shore. The man was not wearing a life jacket.

Rescue workers on shore spoke to the man until lifeboats could reach him.

At 10:19 a.m., firefighters safely pulled the man from the river into a rescue boat under the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge.

Many people watched the rescue operation on the river bank.
