2 veterans mentioned as possible last-minute trade options

Cut day is upon us for Brian Daboll and the NY Giants. While he’s fully focused on getting the number down to 53, General Manager Joe Schoen may not be done bringing in more reinforcements from elsewhere. We’ve seen a few trades around the NFL in recent days. Could there be more on the way?

For the Giants, it’s clearer than ever that this team needs help in the secondary, with a new cornerback specifically needed for defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. At the same time, the G-Men have a few players they could potentially do without. Two names that have been floating around recently have been Azeez Ojulari and Darius Slayton. Could a last-minute deal be in the cards for either of them?

In addition to cornerback, another inside linebacker would be a huge asset, with Micah McFadden’s Week 1 availability questionable due to a hip injury and camp star Dyontae Johnson still working on his recovery from an ankle injury. Either an ILB or CB2 would be ideal for NY.

Giving up Ojulari would hurt a little, but the fact is that Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns will be monsters up front for Bowen and Co. Ojulari will be the first man off the bench, but he might be more useful to another team – preferably one willing to give up the aforementioned ILB or CB.

As for Slayton, he has led the Giants in receiving yards in four of the last five seasons. He has been a reliable player and we would hate to see him go. However, he is in the final year of his contract and the Giants have some depth at that position as Malik Nabers provides fresh momentum while Jalin Hyatt could step in and secure a starting spot with Slayton gone.

In a perfect world, both guys would stay and Schoen could get defensive help elsewhere, but that could be difficult. We should know soon if a trade involving either player happens, but Schoen needs to find a way to get CB/ILB help. The preseason showed just how much concern there is about both positions heading into the season opener against Minnesota.
