While Nelly Korda reacts positively to her return, Allisen Corpuz worries about America’s Solheim Cup revenge

While Nelly Korda reacts positively to her return, Allisen Corpuz worries about America’s Solheim Cup revenge

The captain of the American team selected the final two players to complete the Solheim Cup team that will fight for redemption against the Europeans at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. The lucky two were Lauren Coughlin and Allisen Corpuz. The latter made her Solheim Cup debut at Finca Cortesin in Andalusia, Spain, and posted a record of 2-1-1. She won 2.5 points for the USA, including a foursome pair with Nelly Korda, and took the half point in the foursome with Jennifer Kupcho.

Corpuz could understandably be seen as the perfect choice for the Solheim Cup team, but considering her recent performances, the one-time major winner may not be much help to her team when it comes to battling the Europeans on home soil. Why, you ask? Well, compared to last year, when Corpuz won a major, this year has been uneventful for the 26-year-old professional player. Corpuz has only two top-10 finishes so far and missed the cut in her title defense at the US Women’s Open.

Additionally, Corpuz was unable to regain her form at the AIG Women’s Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews, missing the cut at 7 over par. If her form continues to decline, a match at Robert Trent Jones GC could produce a similar result and Corpuz could fail to score points for Team America. Interestingly, Coughlin, who has had a far better year than Corpuz, also missed the cut at the AIG Women’s Open after winning the Women’s Scottish Open last week.

Corpuz has struggled with form heading into the 2024 season, and with less than 20 days to go until the Solheim Cup, she will need to buckle down and prepare as best she can if the Americans are to defeat the Europeans after a heartbreaking 14-14 loss in Spain. And despite that worrying future, there is one golfer who can truly be an asset to Team USA!

Will the world number 1 turn the tables for Team USA at the 2024 Solheim Cup?

After a winless season on the LPGA Tour in 2023, Nelly Korda thought her dominant phase in women’s golf was over. But when she returned in the 2024 season, her pressure returned and she broke through after six victories on the LPGA Tour. Among other things, the 26-year-old won her second major at the Chevron Championship.

But two starts and one win later, Korda missed three consecutive cuts, the first of her career. She picked herself up, though, finishing T26 after three disappointing starts and looking forward to another breakthrough. This one came after she decided to swap her putter for a TaylorMade Spider Mallet putter, just as Scottie Scheffler has done this season. The decision appears to be paying off for Korda, as she has taken the 36-hole lead at the AIG Women’s Open and could be on course for another important win.

Such a dominant run on the LPGA Tour and Korda’s participation in Solheim in this form can only benefit Team USA and not have to worry any more about beating the Europeans and winning the Solheim Cup after three years. Will Korda maintain her form and will Allisen Corpuz return to hers? That remains to be seen.
