A Korean drama adaptation of the 2017 novel of the same name by Lee Min-jin. Pachinko was created by Soo Hugh. It follows the protagonist Sunja and three generations of her family through the Second World War and its aftermath.

Starring popular South Korean actors Kim Min-ha and Jin Ha, Pachinko Season 1 proved to be an instant success. The Apple TV+ original also won Best Foreign Language Series at the 28th Critics Choice Awards in 2023.

According to OTT Pachinko Season 2 picks up both halves of the story exactly where they left off. In Osaka in the 1940s, Sunja and her family fight tirelessly to survive during World War II. Meanwhile, in the 1980s, Sunja’s grandson Solomon tries to rebuild his career.

What happens in Episode 1 of Pachinko Season 2?

Episode one of the second season begins with Koh Hansu (played by Lee) returning to Osaka in 1945. Meanwhile, Sunja (played by Kim) is having a hard time keeping her kimchi business afloat due to the vegetable shortage. At school, young Mozasu (played by Kwon Eun-seong) and teenager Noa (played by Kim Kang-hoon) are bullied because of their Korean heritage.

American planes drop warning brochures on the market square for the Japanese people, urging them to persuade their emperor to surrender or face consequences. Hansu also learns that World War II is imminent and that the Americans could soon begin bombing. A friend suggests that Sunja sell rice wine illegally, as she only has one last supply of kimchi left.

At school, Noa is the best in his class and the teacher advises him to study to escape this miserable place. Noa takes revenge by saying that he wants to stay there and become a pastor like his father. Noa also informs the teacher that although it has been seven years since his father Isak (played by Noh Sang-hyun) was imprisoned, he believes that one day he will return to them.

In the final moments of the first episode of the historical drama, Sunja is arrested when the police raid the rice wine stalls, but to her shock, she is soon released. She then meets Mr. Kim (Kim Sung-kyu) – an old patron – who takes her to an elite bungalow. There she meets Hansu again. The latter tells her that she will soon have to go to the countryside with her family before the bombings start. However, Sunja is not happy to see Hansu again and refuses his offer, saying that she will not leave her husband behind.

The action then jumps to Tokyo in 1989, where Sunja’s (played by Youn yuh-jung) grandson Solomon (played by Jin) is working hard to make a comeback in the banking and investment world, but to no avail. Later at a bar, his oldest friend Tetsuya offers him a sum of 200 million USD and welcomes him to the fundraising business. Mozasu (played by Soji Arai) in turn offers Solomon a check for 700,000 USD and states that he believes in his son.

Elsewhere, Solomon receives a call from Tetsuya, who tells him that he can no longer do business with him. The episode ends with Solomon plotting revenge against Abe (played by Yoshio Maki), who is responsible for the downfall of his career.
