Earlier this month, HBO took the opportunity House of the Dragon The finale of the second season is intended to be a preview of the second season of Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman‘S Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie)-actor The Last of Us as it prepares for its debut in 2025. Now we have the chance to Isabela Mercedwho checked in with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast to cover a range of personal and professional topics. Unfortunately, one of those topics was the resistance that Merced, Ramsey and Kaitlyn Dever received prior to Season 2 – more than a year before the series even hits theaters. Dever became a lightning rod when it was announced that they were chosen to play the role of Abby simply because of who they are – especially considering the role Abby will play in the future (no spoilers). In addition, Ramsey, Merced and Dever have also been criticized for not being identical to their video game counterparts – both physically and in terms of backstory.

“What’s confusing to me is that the showrunner and the video game developer are working together to make this, so if you like what the guy did and he’s doing more of it, why are you mad? You know what I mean? I don’t know, I have too much opinion to be on Twitter; it really makes me mad because I see stuff like that and it makes me want to do Cardi B,” Merced shared with Horowitz. After Horowitz expressed concerns about the reaction Dever would receive leading up to and during the season, Merced shared that Dever had to be given “extra security” by production security during filming.

The Last of Us: Craig Mazin on Season 2 and beyond

Mazin on the need for a “breaking point” for Season 2: “The story material we got from Part II of the game is much more extensive than the story material from the first game. So from the beginning we had to figure out how to tell this story over multiple seasons. You look for natural break points, and the way we planned it, the natural break point in this season was after seven episodes.”

Mazin on the possibility that they need four seasons to tell their story: “We don’t think we can tell the story in even two seasons (2 and 3) because we take our time and take interesting paths, which we did a little bit in Season 1. We think it’s almost certain that – as long as people keep watching and we can keep producing more on TV – Season 3 will be significantly bigger. And in fact, the story may require Season 4.”

Mazin on possible expansion of the characters’ storylines in season 2: “Sometimes that means we do things the same way we do them in the game, sometimes we do them differently. I think it’s fair to say we’re taking our time to delve deeper into the story and expand on certain areas. Of course there will be some things that will be expanded on, but which characters and how, we’re keeping that a secret.”

Druckmann on “Having a goal in mind” for season 2: “Our approach was that we outlined several seasons and then dove deeper into Season 2. To echo Craig’s statement, there is no filler; everything that is in there is intentional. We always have a goal in mind that we are working towards, we never meander for the sake of meandering, it is always about saying something bigger about these characters and the themes.”

Mazin on a “pretty big” episode in season 2: “Season 1 was really a 10-episode season in hours. And in Season 2, there’s certainly an episode that’s closer to – I don’t know if I’d say feature length, but pretty long. I generally like the episodes to be around an hour long, that’s a great length, I love working in that format. What we don’t want to do is, say, a seven-episode season where each episode is 90 minutes long; one reason we do seven episodes is to find that nice line.”

Season 2 is scheduled to hit HBO and Max screens in 2025. Pascal, Ramsey and Wright will be joined this season by Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Wesley Rutina-Kristin as Mary, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dinah, The young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, and Daniel Ramirez as Manny. Also Catherine O’Hara also guest stars. Behind the camera, Mazin and Druckmann are supported by Peter Hoar (S01E03: “Long, Long Time”) Mark Mylod (HBO’s Consequence), Nina Lopez-Corrado (HBO’s Perry Mason), Stephen Williams (HBO’s Guardian) And Kate Herron (Loki).

HBO’s The Last of Us was written and executive produced by Mazin and Druckmann. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and is also produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter SwanAnd Evan WellsThe production companies are PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint and Naughty Dog.
