Angelo Ogbonna moves to Watford

With about a week to go before the transfer window closes, Watford may be on the verge of signing a player who has performed brilliantly for West Ham over the past nine years.

Angelo Ogbonna is now 36 years old and may be nearing the end of a career that began at Torino FC, then a loan spell at Crotone, a brief stint at Juventus and then at the Hammers, where he became a legend.

Although he did not always make the headlines in East London, the Italian was a reliable and solid player for the Hammers and part of David Moyes’ successful team that won the Europa Conference League.

The Watford Observer points out that the player, who is now out of contract, will move to Vicarage Road before the transfer deadline.

The Hornets have started the 2024/25 Championship season well with two wins from two games.

Although they are currently third in the table, they actually share the top spot with Burnley and Sunderland, who both have the better goal difference.

Former West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna will sign for Watford.

Watford head coach Tom Cleverly is actually a year younger than Ogbonna at 36 and will certainly appreciate having a player with such experience in his team’s defence as Watford look to challenge the English second division this season.

If he stays injury-free for most of the season, it is clear that the Italian will be a great asset to the club.

West Ham, on the other hand, was always going to take a different direction this season than in any other after Tim Steidten won the power struggle against David Moyes.

Given his transfer dealings for the club this season, it can be hard to argue that letting Ogbonna go was not the best decision for everyone involved.
