“He was injured last season” – Ten Hag promises to use the versatile star in several attacking roles

Mason Mount has been a Manchester United player for over a year, but most fans don’t know what his best role in the team is.

This is Mount’s second season at United and more is expected. The former Chelsea midfielder struggled with injuries last season and never really got into the game to cement his place in the team.

United started the 2024/25 season against Fulham without a centre-forward in their starting line-up. This meant that Mount started, playing alongside Bruno Fernandes in the false nine role.

While Mount’s ball-handling was questionable at times, his effort without possession was second to none.

Erik ten Hag was asked about Mount’s best role in the team.

Before travelling to Brighton, Ten Hag said (via MUTV):

“Last season he (Mount) was injured, so he didn’t play many roles.

“I think he’s versatile and I think we can use him in more than one position, but more on offense than defense.”

Ten Hag is defensive in answering this question, but he too will be keen to see if Mount can last this season. It’s all about keeping the player fit, because I have no doubt that he is an excellent footballer and can be of use to the team this season.
