Mayor Eric Adams faced further subpoenas from the federal government last month as part of the investigation into corruption in campaign donations

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — As part of a corruption investigation that has been ongoing for nearly a year, federal prosecutors in New York have served Mayor Eric Adams with another round of grand jury subpoenas.

The new series of subpoenas, first reported by the New York Times, were issued last month and demanded access to communications and documents.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment. Mayor Adams has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

“As a former member of law enforcement, the mayor has made it clear over the past nine months that he will cooperate with any ongoing investigations. That has not changed. He expects everyone’s cooperation to bring these investigations to a speedy conclusion,” Fabien Levy, deputy mayor for communications, said in a statement to ABC News.

Adams confirmed receipt of the subpoenas during a recorded interview with Eyewitness News host Bill Ritter for his program “Sunday Up Close.”

“Like previous administrations that have enforced subpoenas, you participate and cooperate,” Adams said. “You see the subpoena and you respond to it. At the end of the day, it will show that there is no crime here.”

As ABC News previously reported, the investigation is at least in part about whether Adams and his campaign team solicited illegal donations from Turkey to pressure the fire department to expedite an inspection of the new Turkish consulate. Investigators also looked into whether Adams received upgrades on Turkish Airlines flights.

One of Adams’ attorneys, Brendan McGuire, said he and another attorney conducted their own investigations into the areas being examined by federal prosecutors and concluded the mayor did nothing wrong.

“Our investigation included a review of campaign materials, an analysis of tens of thousands of electronic messages, and witness interviews. To be clear, we found no evidence of illegal conduct by the Mayor. To the contrary, we found extensive evidence undermining federal prosecutors’ reported theories regarding the Mayor, which we voluntarily shared with the U.S. Attorney. We continue to cooperate with the investigation and are in the process of responding to the recently issued subpoenas. We continue to look forward to a swift and equitable resolution of this investigation,” McGuire said in a statement provided to ABC News by his firm, WilmerHale.

It is unclear to what extent these subpoenas expand the scope of the federal investigation and how far it has progressed.

In November, FBI agents seized his electronic devices as part of the investigation, days after federal agents raided the Brooklyn home of Adams’ top campaign fundraiser, 25-year-old Brianna Suggs.

No charges were brought against the mayor.
