Greenville Jewish Film Festival this Sunday

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – The Greenville Jewish Film Festival presents an internationally acclaimed documentary on Sunday, August 25 at the Gunter Theater, and the film’s star is bringing more than just his presence to the Upstate.

“Call Me Dancer” is a touching story about a former B-boy dancer from Mumbai and his persistent journey to becoming a trained dancer with the help of a teacher in Israel.

“(It is a) story between mother and son, teacher and student, brother and sister,” said Manish Chauhan, the star of the film.

On Friday, Chauhan gave FOX Carolina a special treat by dancing in front of the Gunter Theater, the same venue where the Greenville Jewish Film Festival was held on Sunday.

“Jewish culture has a long tradition of storytelling,” said Helaine Meyers, co-chair of the festival.

The mission of the festival is to highlight the commonalities between cultures.

“We all have things in common, be it in family dynamics, our dreams, our aspirations or, in Manish’s case, dancing,” Meyers continued.

The neighbors in the north of the state are in for a special treat: Chauhan is offering a dance master class in the cinema from 12:00 to 13:30 before the film is shown.

“I’m really excited for people to come, take a dance class with Manish and then return to the theater to hear his story,” said Caroline Warthern, co-chair of the festival.

“I’m really excited to teach a course because I want to get to know the community in Greenville,” Chauhan added.

The community will experience Chauhan’s strength and passion first hand.

“When we dance, we never pay attention to your skin colour; we never pay attention to your religion, whether Hindi, Muslim or whatever; we just say you are another dancer,” Chauhan said.

The schedule for Sunday is:

  • 12:00 – 13:30: Master class dance workshop (optional)
  • 3:30 p.m.: Doors to the Gunter Theatre open
  • 16:00: Film screening of “Call Me Dancer”
  • 18:00: Reception with catering by Saffron Indian Cuisine
