Teenager shot in drive-by in south Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – A teenager is in the hospital after being injured in a drive-by shooting in south Phoenix Thursday night.

Phoenix police officers responded to the call about the shooting around 11 p.m. near 7th and Romley Avenue, north of Southern Avenue.

Police determined that a young teenage girl was inside a home when she was struck by gunfire from a vehicle driving past the house.

The girl was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“While the injuries are not life-threatening, they are serious and will have serious consequences for the rest of her life,” said Sergeant Brian Bower of the Phoenix Police Department.

The police have no suspects or clues. They hope that neighbors captured the shooter’s vehicle on their surveillance cameras.

“We don’t know how many or who there were, but it looks like a drive-by shooting where they shot indiscriminately at the house, injuring the young woman,” said Sergeant Bower.

Arizona’s family learned that another shooting had occurred in that very house on January 14 of this year. 15-year-old Daniela Espinosa was killed. At that time, police said, a young friend of the family had improperly handled a weapon.

“These are terrible incidents. We want to make sure we gather information from the public so that this doesn’t happen again,” said Sergeant Bower.

Several people were seen coming and going from the house on Friday. They declined to comment on the incidents. Some neighbors said they were concerned for their own well-being after two violent incidents had already occurred in the same house.

“We encourage everyone in these communities, if there is a problem with a home or property or in your neighborhood, to report it to that district’s Community Action Officer,” said Sergeant Bower.

Police are unsure if the two shootings are related. They said the man responsible for the January shooting is in custody.
