Win or die: Poverty Bay men’s hockey club in the semifinals

With so much at stake in this all-important 2v3 semi-final, there is potential for a thrilling finale.

YMP A starts as clear favorites. They are undefeated this season, their only lost points being a draw against GBHS.

They are in superb form and Waituhi face a huge task if they want to beat them.

However, the underdogs are up to the challenge and are expected to fight tooth and nail.

On paper it is not a good duel, but in sport anything can happen.

In the other men’s game this evening from 7:30 p.m., the LPSC Resene Masters will face YMP B, continuing the exciting series between the two bottom teams in the table.

In the women’s games, PGG Wrightson Ngātapa and GMC Kōwhai renew their rivalry tomorrow at 2pm.

A win for Ngātapa would cement their place in the top four ahead of the women’s final series next week.

However, Kōwhai has shown significant improvements over the course of the season and will aim to exceed all expectations.

Given Ngātapa’s accurate finishing, goals are expected in what promises to be an entertaining game.

Gisborne Girls’ High School’s first team are likely to be brought back down to earth when they face rival heavyweights YMP A at 3.30pm on Saturday.

After a morale-boosting win against LPSC Paikea, Girls’ High now faces a daunting task against a team known for their attacking prowess and stingy defense.

YMP A have conceded very few goals this season, suggesting that it has been a one-sided affair in terms of possession.

However, students have demonstrated resilience throughout the campaign and will seek to continue their improvement.

Gisborne Denture Centre GMC Green concludes the regular season tomorrow at 5pm when they face LPSC Emerre and Hathaway Paikea.

When the sun goes down, both teams will try to end the round with a win.

GMC Green have been a formidable attacking force in the women’s competition and Paikea is well aware of the threat they pose.

Paikea’s defence will have its hands full trying to keep the competition’s strongest strikers at bay.
