12-year-old girl shot in her sleep; police say: “We have to solve this”

UPDATE:

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims issued a statement about the shooting, which he called “tragic” and “sickening.”

“We are fully committed to ensuring that those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgency and need to combat violence in our city,” Mims said, among other things.

Police are investigating after a 12-year-old girl was shot in her bed while she was sleeping.

Dayton Police Major Brian Johns confirmed that the girl was shot around 1 a.m. in the upstairs bedroom of the home in the first block of W. Fairview Avenue.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified 12-year-old Isabellas Amor-Carlos as the victim.

Amor-Carlos’ family had previously identified her as the victim to News Center 7’s Mike Campbell.

Amor-Carlos, a student at Charity Adams Earley Girls Academy, was found by her younger sister.

The house, as well as at least one other neighboring house, was hit by gunfire. Police found more than 30 rifle shell casings at the scene and said the shots came from the direction of the street. Johns said it appeared there were two shooters.

“It is critical that we solve this crime,” Johns said. “A 12-year-old girl was sleeping in her bed and was murdered in front of her family.”

Amor-Carlos’ murder is part of a terrible trend. There have been 28 murder investigations in Dayton so far this year. As reported News Center 7 at 6:00Eight of these victims were young people under the age of 18, and a total of ten victims, or more than a third, were young people aged 18 or younger.
