New social housing building opens in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi’s affordable housing portfolio now includes approximately 70 new low-cost housing units for families.

The Palms at Blucher Park – located at the corner of 213 and 218 S. Tancahua St. – was built in part on land that formerly housed a fire station that had been vacant for decades, according to city officials.

The construction of the apartment complexes represents an investment of around $20 million. Funding sources include $16.6 million from low-income tax credits and around $1 million from the city’s federal housing fund, City Manager Peter Zanoni said at a press conference on Friday.

According to a city press release, eligible residents of the complexes developed by TG100 Inc. PROSPERA Property Management earn 60% or less of the median income in the Corpus Christi area.

Several speakers at the press conference described affordable housing for families as an integral part of the functions of a larger community. In her address, Jacque Woodring, president and CEO of Prospera Property Management, called it “part of the infrastructure of the city, county and state.”

Residents of all income levels should “have access to safe and good living conditions,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo, describing affordable housing as “a critical element in the fabric of our thriving city.”

“The cost of living in many urban areas … where there are typically more jobs is extraordinarily high,” she told the audience at the press conference before the complex’s opening. “So apartments like this are even more important for families who are looking.”
