A father-son team tiled the floor of their garage – using 33,000 2-p coins.

Dominic Lowe, 55, and his 25-year-old son Jon are in the process of repairing a stunning 5-square-meter copper mosaic floor.

Eventually the floor area will be covered with around 33,700 coins – worth £674 – and so far around 17,000 of them have been carefully stuck on using tubes of glue.

The mammoth project also includes soaking the coins in Coca-Cola to make them shine.

Retiree Dominic came up with the idea after seeing a picture on Facebook and decided it would be the perfect way to spruce up the newly built garage at his home.

He said: “We polished some of the coins and left some matte to create a two-tone effect.

“I wanted to arrange the coins in a pattern – I think it reminds different people of different things, for some it’s like the pyramids, the inside of the tombs.

This is a two-man job, as he and Jon spend about ten hours a week bending over their handiwork and laying out the coin triangles.

Jon’s twin brother James helped with the coin collecting and his younger sister Katie, 21, spent a few hours preparing the ground.

Pensioner Dominic came up with the idea after seeing a picture on Facebook and decided it would be the perfect way to spruce up the newly built garage at his home in Pensford, Somerset.

Friends have donated their change and since Dominic started doing this three weeks ago, strangers have approached him on the street and given him 2p coins.

“We have used 12 tubes of glue so far and have received coins from the Isle of Man, the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar. I may also use pennies to fill in the gaps around the edge,” he said.

Bar manager Jon added: “It’s been a great project to be involved in and I can’t wait for it to be finished because my back is starting to hurt.”

And when everything is finished, he wants to hold a party: “It will have the best dance floor in the village.”
