Passenger dies after jumping from world’s largest cruise ship while departing Florida

A passenger died when he jumped overboard from the world’s largest cruise ship after departing Florida.

The male passenger, whose identity is not yet known, jumped loudly New York Post, from the 20-deck plateau Icon of the seas after leaving a port in Florida on Sunday to embark on a seven-day cruise of the Caribbean, with the first stop in Honduras.

The Coast Guard, which said it had not been much involved in the incident other than helping to locate the man, said the New York Post that “the cruise ship sent out one of its lifeboats, found the man and brought him back on board.”

The man has since been “pronounced dead,” the coast guard added.

The world’s largest cruise experience was located about 300 miles from PortMiami and about 30 to 40 miles north of Santa Lucia, Cuba, at the time of the incident, which occurred this morning, according to Cruise hive.

Royal Caribbean, which Icon of the seas and other groundbreakingly large cruise ships, told the outlet in a statement that the ship’s crew immediately notified the Coast Guard in the United States and “initiated a search and rescue operation.”

“Our care team is supporting and advising guests’ families during this difficult time,” the cruise line added. “For privacy reasons, we are unable to provide any further details.”

The ship, which holds well over 5,000 guests and only made its maiden voyage in January of this year, had set off on the cruise on Saturday but was disrupted following the incident on Sunday and remained in place for about two hours while the search continued, the outlet said.

According to CruiseMapper tracking data, the Icon of the seas continues the cruise and makes the next stop on Coco Cay in the Bahamas on Friday.

Zachary Normandian, 31, said The New York Post that the atmosphere on board the ship was “dystopian” after people continued their holidays on board the ship following the tragedy.

“It just seemed like more people were saying, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on?’ but no, people were just going about their day,” he said.

The passenger recalled the moment when the man who had fallen overboard was brought back to the ship after the captain, according to him, informed the ship that the missing person had been found.

“Everyone in the dining room was clapping,” Normandian told the outlet. “We assumed the man was OK.”

At that time, however, they did not yet know that he had died.

The incident occurred more than a month after a similar tragedy on another Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the Freedom of the Seas when a 20-year-old man named Levion Parker is said to have fallen overboard during a trip around the Bahamas.

The cruise company immediately launched a search and rescue mission together with the US Coast Guard, but it was called off after five days because the man could not be found.

However, the cruise company has also had some successful rescue operations in recent months, such as the rescue of a passenger who fell from the Symphony of the Seas in October.

The cruise line, which had just left Barcelona at the time, said the guest had been successfully brought back on board after falling shortly after leaving the port.

The Independent has asked Royal Caribbean for comment.
