The Steelers must make improvements in free agency to meet their overwhelming needs

As the Steelers face the Detroit Lions in their final preseason game, there are still plenty of issues with the roster. The biggest concern remains receiver, as Pittsburgh continues to be included in all the rumors about potential upgrades. Don’t forget about other potential issues that could be a concern in the future.

If they want a strong team with a lot of depth, the Steelers should consider options on the transfer market and the free agent market. When the final cuts are made, everyone should expect the Black and Gold to look for players on the waiver list to sign.

This squad is unlikely to be complete, even though the initial 53-man squad has been confirmed.

Slot receivers are perhaps a bigger question mark than the outside receiver options currently available on the team. Perhaps Pat Freiermuth can help solve that problem while Roman Wilson looks for his way to the NFL. One option still available as a free agent is Hunter Renfrow. He was once considered one of the best slot receivers in the NFL, but now he’s just looking for an opportunity to prove himself again.

Right now, Beanie Bishop is the Steelers’ only starting option for the cornerback slot. They need to add a reinforcement or two at that position to either steal the job from Bishop or have a reliable backup behind him. Patrick Peterson is getting older, but proved he has versatility in the final stretch of last season. Bringing Peterson into the slot would be a nice addition late in the process.

It was likely that Zach Frazier would be the starting center at some point anyway, but the loss of Nate Herbig to injury still hurts. The Steelers would be wise to secure an experienced option in free agency to provide quality depth at center and guard. Mason Cole has been discussed. Scott Quessenberry would also make a lot of sense, as Zachary Smith mentioned.

Years ago, rumors circulated that Justin Houston had turned down an offer from the Steelers to join them. This season, he signed with the Ravens. Now, the veteran pass rusher is on the couch waiting for a call to play this year. Markus Golden resigned during training camp, and players behind TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig are suspects. Signing Houston would provide a huge boost.

Many will not like the option of the Steelers potentially signing JuJu Smith-Schuster as a free agent. He may not be the reinforcement the team is looking for, but he can add another option that will at least improve the depth of the roster. We’ll see if Pittsburgh can secure a top option through a trade, but if not, someone like Smith-Schuster could be their fallback option.
