‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor Tamayo Perry dies after shark attack while surfing in Hawaii

A lifeguard who appeared in the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film has died in a shark attack off the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Tamayo Perry, 49, who also starred in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and “Blue Crush,” was attacked near Goat Island on Sunday afternoon, Honolulu emergency services said.

The incident was reported by a caller who said he saw a man who appeared to be suffering from shark bites.

Shortly before 1 p.m. local time, rescue workers arrived at the scene of the accident at Malaekahana Beach.

Rescue workers brought Mr. Perry – a lifeguard and surf instructor with Ocean Safety – to shore on a jet ski and paramedics helped confirm his death, said Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Department.

Mr Perry, who worked as a lifeguard on the North Coast, began his career with the Marine Safety Department in July 2016, Mr Enright said.

He appeared as a pirate in “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the Honolulu-based Star Advertiser reported in 2011.

Following the attack, Ocean Safety staff issued shark alerts in the area.

Kurt Lager, acting director of Honolulu Ocean Safety, said Mr Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all”.

“He is very well known on the North Shore. He is a world-famous professional surfer,” Lager said.

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more.”

“Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected fisherman,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, calling Mr. Perry’s death “a tragic loss.”
