5-year-old dies after accidentally shooting himself

SANTAQUIN, Utah – A 5-year-old boy died Thursday after accidentally shooting himself in his Santaquin home, police said.

Santaquin police said emergency responders attempted life-saving measures after arriving at the boy’s home, but the boy later died at the scene.

The unidentified boy managed to grab the gun inside the home in the Santaquin Canyon Road area before accidentally firing a shot.

The child was found injured in the back bedroom, armed with a 9mm pistol. Officials said the parents were in another room when the shooting rang out.

“At this time we are not filing any charges and are considering this a tragic incident,” said Santaquin Police Officer Cody Tipler.

How the child was able to get hold of the already loaded weapon is currently being investigated.

“If you have a gun lock, it is best to always keep the gun unloaded, keep ammunition away from the gun, and keep the gun in a safe,” the detective said.

According to the Associated Press, Utah has no laws that penalize someone for failing to secure an unattended firearm and leaving it accessible to an unsupervised minor. The state also does not require unattended firearms to be stored in a particular way or require a lock to be sold with a firearm.

Tipler added that the family has already received a lot of support, including from the church community and surrounding neighbors.
