Mariners sign Hall of Famer Edgar Martínez as part of coaching restructuring

The Seattle Mariners parted ways with manager Scott Servais and hitting coach Jarret DeHart on Thursday and quickly found replacements.

Dan Wilson will take over as manager – without even having won the interim title before – and he will be assisted by a new hitting coach whose job it is to turn around the weakest offense in the MLB.

In Seattle, the hitting coach role is taken on by none other than Hall of Fame designated hitter Edgar Martinez. He spent his entire MLB career with the Mariners from 1987 to 2004. Martinez is one of the best players in franchise history and will look to breathe new life into an offense that ranks last in batting average.

Martinez was one of the best pure hitters of his generation, hitting 309 home runs and posting a .312 batting average in his 18 major league seasons. His 1,261 RBIs and 514 doubles are both the best in Seattle history.

With the Mariners still in the hunt for the playoffs, the drastic changes to the coaching staff came as a surprise. Both Wilson and Martinez were part of the franchise’s record-setting 116-win season in 2001 and will now look to help the team sneak into the playoffs with just over a month of the season left.
