New California bill could extend last round for VIPs at Intuit Dome until 4 a.m.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — A new bill from California could allow VIP suite owners at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood to serve alcohol until 4 a.m.

Assembly Bill 3206 would make the Intuit Dome, the new $2 billion arena that opened this month, the only late-night bar in the state serving alcohol after 2 a.m.

The bill would allow VIP suite holders to access enhanced bar service, but not regular venue visitors.

Current law prohibits the serving of alcohol between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Bartenders and customers who do so could be charged with a misdemeanor.

State Senator Scott Wiener said the bill takes a new approach to balancing public health and safety.

“The bill includes a number of safeguards, including limiting the size of the establishment and the number of customers who can be there,” Weiner said, “limiting the days the establishment can sell alcohol after hours and requiring a local permit to address potential public health and safety concerns.”

Opponents argue that this is not only an unfair abuse of financial power, but also a threat to public safety.

“If they think that keeping bars open and serving drinks until 4 a.m. is only good for select groups, then it should apply to everyone. And I don’t think that’s good for anyone,” said State Senator Kelly Seyarto.

Organizations like Alcohol Justice are calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to block the law.

“Even if just one bar or restaurant stays open until 4 a.m., the likelihood of drunk driving, alcohol-related violence and all types of alcohol-related harm increases significantly,” said Michael Scrippa, director of public affairs.

The bill, which passed the state Senate this week, is generating mixed reactions on both sides.

“I think that’s maybe a little unfair,” said Anthony Woods, an Inglewood resident. “I mean, I don’t understand what the point is in having that for the suites. I mean, if everything closes at 2 a.m., why wouldn’t they follow that kind of rule?”

Newsom must make a decision by the end of September.
