Adam Scott writes BMW Championship history and brings the FedEx Cup within reach

Longtime PGA Tour veteran Adam Scott played the back nine last Sunday under incredible stress. He had to perform to the last to ensure he even made it to Colorado for this week’s BMW Championship. He did just that, and now Scott suddenly has a shot at the FedEx Cup after Friday’s second round.

Scott posted the following a track record 9-under-par 63 at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, according to the PGA Tour. That performance catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard at 13 under par. He currently holds a five-shot lead over Alex Noren, who is also in the clubhouse. First-round leader Keegan Bradley is six shots back but still has much of his round left.

Nevertheless, Scott was enthusiastic about his game and is in top form going into the weekend.

“…It’s a great round. I think I took advantage of the good conditions this morning and hope I can really push on Sunday,” said Scott after his round.

“I played within my capabilities. I picked pretty conservative targets. But it was a good day to be aggressive when you had the right number, like on 16… I didn’t play overly aggressive, but I think I executed well and putted very well today.”

Scott almost made a hole-in-one on the par 3 16th hole, where he missed by a small margin. He followed that up with another birdie on hole 17, securing a clean slate.

Adam Scott has not won a tournament since 2020. Since that win, he has had a few very turbulent years with inconsistent play.

When he played his final round at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, Scott wasn’t even sure if he would make it this week. A strong finish allowed him to rise to 41st in the FedEx Cup standings, securing a free pass to this event as well as major signature events in 2025.

That obviously took a lot of pressure off.

“It’s a big deal for anybody to make it into the top 50 on TOUR and I think that was a relief last week. I have to say, playing the last nine holes was pretty tough. I knew I had a shot here and there depending on whether I was in or out and it was good to get through that.”

Once he got that behind him, he was able to carry that momentum into the BMW Championship. He started the week ranked 41st and needed to finish in the top 30 to secure his spot in next week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta. Now Scott is projected to finish fourth in the overall standings, making him a real contender for the 2024 FedEx Cup title.

“Of course I would like to make it to East Lake, but right now I would like to win this event.”

He will surely get his chance.
