Fast food employees hate it when you do this in the drive-thru

The introduction of drive-thru lanes has forever changed the way we eat. From McDonald’s to Taco Bell, nearly every fast-food chain has a drive-thru where you can conveniently order a Big Mac or Crunchwrap without leaving your car. But don’t get too comfortable—just like eating at a restaurant, there are important etiquette rules to follow when waiting in line for a Frappuccino.

We scoured Reddit, from subreddits for all fast food workers to those specifically geared toward McDonald’s and Starbucks, to find out what not to do in the drive-thru. And we ended up with a pretty long list. Here are the things customers do that drive-thru workers hate the most:

Smoking or vaping

Just don’t do it. Not everyone wants to have smoke blown in their face, not to mention lingering smells.

Indecision when ordering

We know it can be hard to decide, but please hurry. Here are some ideas for the McDonald’s dollar menu and the Wendy’s breakfast menu.

Place a bulk order

If you are placing a large order, it is probably better to order inside so that the line is not held up.

Place orders from the passenger seat

The design of drive-ins already makes hearing difficult, but here it gets even worse for employees.

Get distracted by your phone

Maybe you’re just passing the time by scrolling through Instagram, but you’ll probably get distracted and slow down the line when it’s your turn to move on. Just be careful.

Order more food at the second window

You guessed it – it holds up the line. Have your complete order ready so you can place it at the first speaker.

Your payment is not ready

Spending time rummaging through your wallet will slow the line down. Have your payment or app ready while you wait in line. not at the window. And we don’t even want to start talking about paying with coins.

Play loud music

Maybe you can hear something despite the loud music, but it is difficult for an employee with a headset.

Give them your garbage

Nobody wants to dispose of your garbage. Besides, it is not hygienic.

Check your entire order at the window

It’s fine to check that your order is correct, but according to Reddit threads, it’s best to move out of line and to the front of the line when doing so to keep things moving.
