New economic podcast: Lessons for the left after the far-right unrest

A few weeks ago, far-right rioters gathered outside a hotel in Rotherham that was housing asylum seekers and attempted to set it on fire. Across the country, this horrific act of violence was repeated as mosques, libraries and people travelling home from work were attacked.

Yet in the face of this racist and Islamophobic violence, people gathered to protest the presence of the far-right in their communities and to rebuild after the attacks. It was people’s solidarity with their neighbors that ultimately seemed to contain the unrest.

When the dust of violence has settled, how can we combat the rise of the far right? Is economic hardship and austerity the cause of this week of violence? And can communities come together to fight racism and Islamophobia?

For a one-off special episode of the podcast, Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by Minnie Raham, Managing Director of Praxis, and Abi O’Connor, Researcher at NEF.
