Longhorn Network releases first episode of documentary “We Are Texas”

The reinvented Longhorn Network has released the first episode of a multi-part docuseries about world champion volleyball Texas called “We Are Texas,” the first original content series from Texas Athletics.

The docuseries follows them as they prepare for the 2024 season and strive for an unprecedented third consecutive national championship title.

“Longhorn Nation loves Texas volleyball and this streaming platform and series is another way for fans to learn more about our outstanding programs, student-athletes and coaching staff,” said Drew Martin, Executive Sr. Associate Athletics Director at the University of Texas. “We are very excited about this series and the more to come from our talented Athletics and Learfield Studios staff.”

The series’ 11-minute debut offers a behind-the-scenes look at the 2023 National Championship and a visit to the White House.

Texas defeated Nebraska 3-0 to win the title.

“It feels like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders,” said Madisen Skinner. “This is the best thing you’ve been hoping to do all season.”

Skinner, a two-time national champion with Texas and once with Kentucky, is considered “the face of college volleyball of the future.”

The episode provides insight into the thoughts of Skinner and her teammates and coaches, plus previously unreleased celebration clips. Senior libero Keonilei Akana spoke about the different mindsets for the 2022 and 2023 championships.

In 2022, Texas dominated the NCAA with only one loss, a 3-2 defeat to Iowa State. The Longhorns held on to first place all season and the title was just the icing on the cake. 2023 was different, it started off rough with out-of-conference losses and doubts from fans and spectators.

“We had such a tough season,” Akana said. “People were wondering if we were going to win or if we were going to make it that far. Just the fight we showed last year and the feeling of winning the Cup again was special in a lot of ways.”

Along with other national college champions, Texas Volleyball was invited to celebrate and tour the White House in Washington DC

In 2024, the Longhorns aim to win their third consecutive title. The first episode ends with a look at the first fall practice and the mindset of a championship team.

The three-part series will air every Thursday on Longhorn Network. Additional series with the same concept on other sports are scheduled to appear on LHN in the fall.
