4-year-old girl dies in India after golden retriever falls on her from fifth floor of building

A four-year-old girl died in India when a dog fell on her from the fifth floor of a building, police said.

The incident, captured on CCTV, occurred around 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday in Mumbra, 30 kilometers from Mumbai in the western state of Maharashtra.

The girl was walking with her mother down a busy street full of street vendors when a golden retriever fell on them.

The girl, who was walking between two women, was immediately lifted up. The dog remained lying still on the ground for a few seconds before summoning the strength to stand up.

The child was taken to a local private hospital and later shifted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The dog suffered several broken bones and was taken to an animal shelter for treatment.

It is unclear why the dog fell. Police said they are investigating the incident.

The girl’s uncle, Asif Rangrez, said the resident of the apartment from which the dog fell had allegedly kept several dogs on the terrace without permission. Economic Times reported.

“The incident occurred solely due to the negligence of the dog owner. The police should take appropriate action,” he said.

Mr Rangrez said the girl was an only child of her parents, who had been struggling to conceive for about eight years.

Kshama Shirodkar, a veterinarian with the Thane municipality, said they would investigate the allegations against the dog owner and check whether there were any cases of animal cruelty.

The police also investigated whether the dog owner had violated regulations and tried to determine the circumstances that led to the dog’s fall.

The child’s funeral took place on Wednesday.
