EVANSTON, Ill. (August 22, 2024) – Goals in the first half by Paul Son And Joe Suchecki was the culmination of a dominant performance by Northwestern (1-0), which earned a 2-0 victory over Green Bay (0-1) tonight in the opening game of the 2024 regular season at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

How it happened
Northwestern got off to an early start on this perfect football night on the shores of Lake Michigan. After just over two minutes, Son took advantage of a Green Bay turnover, intercepted a pass in the 16-yard box and fired in from 11 yards out at the near post to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead.

After Northwestern had the better game in the first half, it struck again in the last minutes of the third. After a pass from Jayvin Van Deventer, Italo Addimandi sent a cross into the box that landed at Suchecki’s feet. The Wildcat debutant did the rest, firing past Phoenix goalkeeper Alvaro Rodriguez to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Northwestern continued its advance after the break, seeking a third goal. Tyler Glassberg conceded two attempts within three minutes, with the second forcing Rodriguez to make a diving save at the near post. Christopher Thaggard With a quarter of an hour to go, his right-footed shot from the left side of the penalty area was just inches away from a spectacular goal that could only be stopped by Rodriguez’s far post.

However, additional security was not necessary this evening, as Northwestern won its opening game of the regular season for the second time in as many seasons.
