On Thursday, August 22, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Horizon City Police Headquarters and Municipal Court Building, which is being built in the rapidly growing community in eastern El Paso County.

The new police station is “a significant milestone for our community,” said Marco A. Vargas, Horizon City Police Chief, at the event. “The milestone not only marks the beginning of a new building, but also the beginning of a new chapter for our community.”

Horizon City’s new municipal facilities building will house the police department, municipal court and civil services.

The $10 million project, which has been years in the making, is being built at 15005 Darrington Road near Horizon Boulevard, across from the current police building. Completion is scheduled for fall 2025, the Horizon City Police Department said in a news release. The project was designed by Exigo Architecture and contractor Dantex Construction.

Horizon City Mayor Andres Renteria, Chief Vargas and other city officials were present at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Dignitaries in attendance included El Paso County District Attorney Bill Hicks, El Paso County Commissioner Iliana Holguin, and police officers from surrounding communities.

“The new police station is the result of a collaborative effort to improve the safety and well-being of every member of our community,” Vargas said.

The Horizon City Police Department was established about 36 years ago and employs about 30 full-time officers in this booming suburb east of El Paso. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Horizon City’s population has grown from 5,000 in 2000 to an estimated 24,000 today.

Horizon City and the surrounding areas of Eastlake and Mission Ridge are among the fastest growing parts of El Paso County.
