Guwahati: A Class 10 student was allegedly gang-raped by three men near Dhing town in central Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday night, sparking violent protests by locals on Friday.

According to police, the girl was found semi-conscious near a pond on Thursday evening and rescued by locals. The girl was on her way back from school on her bicycle.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday condemned the incident and asked Director General of Police GP Singh to rush to Dhing as hundreds of protesters took to the streets on Friday morning demanding immediate arrest and action against the rapists.

Several organizations called for a strike in Dhing town to protest against the incident.

“The horrific incident at Dhing involving a minor is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience. We will not spare anyone and will bring the perpetrators to justice. I have directed @DGPAssamPolice to visit the spot and ensure swift action against such monsters,” CM Sarma posted on X.

Police said two people had been arrested in connection with the case. “We are still looking for two more people,” a police officer said.
