Astros reunite with star pitcher to provide needed boost, insider says

Big steps are nothing new for the Houston Astros.

Houston has completely turned its season around and now looks like a team that can pose a real threat in the fall. However, like any other contender, the Astros could use some reinforcements in the bullpen. They clearly know this and are reportedly reuniting Houston with veteran reliever Héctor Neris, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC 2.

“Source: Héctor Neris signs with the Astros,” Alexander said. “He’s back.”

Neris obviously knows the Astros well, having spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons in Houston. He developed into one of the Astros’ most reliable bullpen arms and was one of the best relievers in baseball last season.

The 35-year-old played in 71 games for the Astros last season and had the best season of his career, posting a staggering 1.71 ERA and a 77-to-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 68 1/3 innings pitched.

Houston has a good chance to make a splash down the stretch, and the return of Neris will certainly help. He joined the Chicago Cubs ahead of the 2024 season and appeared in 46 games, had a 3.89 ERA and 17 saves, and a 46-to-26 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Astros are obviously giving it their all and are trying to get deep into the playoffs with their current core.
