Baldwin: Social Security and Medicare at risk if Trump wins

US Senator Tammy Baldwin said in a speech at the Democratic Party Convention in Chicago on Thursday evening that Social Security and Medicare would be in danger if Donald Trump is elected in November.

The Madison Democrat told delegates that her mother was an addicted teenager when she was born and she never knew her father. Baldwin noted that she was raised by her grandparents, David and Doris.

“My grandparents were there for me in every way a child needs. And as they got older, I was honored to be there for them,” Baldwin said. “So when I advocate for protecting Medicare and Social Security, I do so with the personal knowledge of what these great programs meant to my grandparents in small but deeply meaningful ways.”

Baldwin said she knows what the programs mean for parents and grandparents, but “that’s all at risk today.”

“Donald Trump was asked what he would do about Social Security and Medicare, and he said – and I quote – ‘There’s a lot you can do about cuts,'” she said. “Cuts? He’s talking about cutting Social Security and Medicare while giving huge new tax breaks to billionaires and corporations? Well, Kamala Harris is not going to allow that, and Tim Walz is not going to allow that; we are not going to allow that.”

Madison businessman and Baldwin’s Republican opponent, Eric Hovde, reacted to the speech, saying Baldwin’s record did not match her rhetoric.

“From record-high inflation to the border crisis to a broken health care system, the people of Wisconsin are struggling every day with the failed policies of Vice President Harris and Senator Baldwin,” Hovde said. “It’s time for a change!”
