17-year-old Texas high school football player dies after falling from roof at wild party with lots of alcohol

A Texas high school football player died over the weekend after falling from a roof. There were wild parties with underage drinking and lots of alcohol in the house.

Adan De La Cruz III, 17, died in a hospital four days after he fell from a roof during the party early Saturday in McAllen and hit his head and neck on the concrete patio below, according to reports and school district information.

An adult and two minors were arrested and charged with selling alcohol to minors, McAllen police said, KRGV reported.

De La Cruz, a 12th-grader at Nikki Rowe High School, stood on the roof of a gazebo with a friend as dozens of teenagers watched the morning’s frenzy.

His buddy jumped from the roof into the pool below and De La Cruz appeared to want to follow but instead lost his footing and fell to the ground, according to a shocking clip of the fatal fall shared on social media.

He landed head and neck first on the concrete floor and “did not appear to move” after hitting the sidewalk, a police report said.

As The Monitor reported, police and paramedics were called at 2:09 a.m. to the house party, which was announced on social media and charged an admission fee.

An underage girl led arriving officers to De La Cruz, who was lying unconscious on his back with a pool of blood under his head, according to a police report obtained by the local news agency.

One teenager held his head while another attempted to perform CPR, the report said.

Officers performed life-saving measures before an ambulance arrived and took the high school student to the hospital.

A 51-year-old McAllen man, his teenage son and a second teenage boy were identified as hosts and organizers of the party and arrested.

Jaime De La Cerda Islas, whose brother-in-law owned the house, was sentenced to prison and ordered to post $30,000 bail. He was released the next day.

The teens had created a digital flyer advertising a party at the venue and shared the flyer on social media, listing their Instagram accounts as the hosts. Event organizers charged $10 up front for admission — which was deposited into the CashApp account of one of the arrested teens — and $15 for admission at the door, according to the police report.

Inside, the party guests had unhindered access to alcoholic beverages already present at the party, according to the report.

When officers arrived at the party for De La Cruz, they saw several juveniles running to their cars and quickly leaving the party. They also saw red plastic cups and open Michelob Ultra beer carts scattered throughout the property.

When they arrived, the light of a disco ball was still burning, drowning out the screams from the backyard with music.

The Nikki Rowe High School student council has planned a candlelight memorial service for De La Cruz on Friday.

“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of one of our students,” McAllen ISD said in a press release.

“He was a wonderful young man, very popular and admired by those around him. We will miss him, but we will not forget him.”
