EAST POINTE, Mich. – A 14-year-old Detroit-area girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend have been charged as adults with plotting to murder the girl’s mother.

The 17-year-old is accused of entering the family’s Eastpointe home through an open door in July and attempting to strangle the mother in her sleep, the Macomb County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release Thursday.

The boy ran after being confronted by other family members in the house.

Eastpointe police believed the two teenagers had planned the attack, prosecutors said.

“The minor daughter had met another minor through a social media app,” Eastpointe Police Chief Corey Haines told WJBK-TV. “They decided together that they were going to kill the mother.”

Police said the girl’s mother took her cell phone after there were problems with the girl at home. The mother did not know about the boyfriend.

The girl was arraigned on August 14 on charges of solicitation to commit murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder. Her bail was set at $1 million. The 17-year-old was arraigned on August 12 on charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder and assault with intent to commit murder. His bail was set at $2.5 million.

Both were held in the county’s juvenile court and will face a probation hearing in Eastpointe District Court on Tuesday.

Their names were not published.

“This level of criminal activity is unacceptable and we intend to treat it with the severity it deserves,” District Attorney Peter J. Lucido said in a press release. “That’s why we want to charge these juveniles as adults – because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences.”
