A mother confessed to drowning her daughter. She tried to commit suicide in prison

GALLATIN, Tenn. (WTVF) — She was locked up after admitting to drowning her daughter, but Brandi Elliott was hospitalized after an incident at the Sumner County Jail.

And after a suicide attempt, she might change institutions completely.

I now have exclusive details of the incident and what this development means for the prosecution in light of a possible capital crime.

Elliott has been in the Sumner County Jail since her arrest on murder charges last month. She is accused of intentionally killing her seven-year-old daughter, Piper.

She confessed to holding her daughter’s head under water until she stopped breathing. The child later died in hospital.

Last Sunday, Elliott was being treated for banging her head against the wall in her cell, resulting in two black eyes. Then on Monday, Elliott fell headfirst from the cot onto the concrete floor.

She was admitted to hospital breathless but is now stable.

Elliott’s mental health will be an issue if and when this case goes to trial – something she spoke about in her only court appearance last month. She told a judge her mental well-being began to deteriorate when her daughter was two and she was diagnosed with depression.

“The jury is going to want someone who is responsible for the death of that child,” said Nick Leonardo, legal expert at NewsChannel 5. “A person accused of killing his own child obviously has mental health issues. The question is whether that justifies a defense.”

Elliott is expected to leave the hospital but not go to jail. While she awaits trial, she will be transferred to a state facility better suited to her behavior.

The grand jury is expected to indict Elliott on murder charges, after which the case will go to trial.

The district attorney has not said whether he will seek the death penalty, which is an option. The Gallatin community has been in shock since learning of the crime.

Deanna Sartain, who knew Piper and worked with Elliott, still can’t believe it.

“I keep analyzing it, and there’s nothing. Nothing, Nick. I just don’t understand it,” Sartain said.

Elliott was held without bail and placed on suicide watch.

Your conduct behind bars could lead to a diminished responsibility defense.

That remains to be seen.
