Taliban officials say 35 people die in storm that brought heavy rains to eastern Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A storm that brought heavy rains to eastern Afghanistan killed at least 35 people on Monday, a Taliban official said.

According to Sediqullah Quraishi, provincial director of the Ministry of Information and Culture, numerous other people were injured throughout Nangarhar province.

Among the dead were five members of the same family who died when the roof of their house collapsed in Surkh Rod district, Quraishi said. Four other family members were injured.

He said that women and children were among the dead and injured and that the weather had destroyed much property and crops in various parts of the province.

Aminullah Sharif, head of Nangarhar Regional Hospital, said 207 injured people had been brought in for treatment from Jalalabad, the provincial capital, and surrounding districts.

He added that dozens of locals had gathered at the hospital to donate blood for the injured.

The World Food Programme had previously stated that the exceptionally heavy rains in Afghanistan on May 10 and 11 had killed more than 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes, mainly in the northern province of Baghlan. The survivors were left without homes, without land and without livelihoods, the WFP said.
