Discolored water worries Edmonson County residents

BROWNSVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) – Many Edmonson County residents took to social media to raise awareness about the discoloration of water entering their homes.

As the pictures circulated online, many residents said this was a regular occurrence.

WBKO spoke with Kevin Shaw, manager of the Edmonson County Water District, about the social media posts and he provided some clarification on the matter.

“The Corps of Engineers has resumed demolition of the locks that could affect our Brownsville plant,” Shaw said, “but to date there has been no problem there either.”

He also mentioned that a resident had cut a water pipe on Monday, causing a drop in pressure and cloudy water. To remedy the situation, employees have been flushing the water pipes.

Residents must consult with utility companies before beginning any construction on their property that involves excavation. Touching a utility line can cause quality issues or disruption for many.

Shaw says he is grateful to his smaller team that continues to overcome challenges and improve the water system.

WBKO inquired about the $6.5 million grant awarded to the county to learn how it was used to improve the water system. Shaw said due to processes that take place before the funds are disbursed, the county is still waiting for the funds.

The grant provides $1 million for the pump station and line improvements in the northern part of the county, $3.5 million for a new intake tower and $2 million for general upgrades, for a total of $6.5 million.
