City Of Troy has competed in his last race in Europe this year, the next target is the Breeders’ Cup | Horse Racing

Aidan O’Brien’s great summer on British turf continued here on Thursday as Content and Ryan Moore justified their 3-1 favourites in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. While his stable star City Of Troy looks to have run his last race in Europe this year, he has plenty of stablemates to continue the charge.

“It looks like City is going straight to the (Breeders’ Cup) Classic,” O’Brien said. “That will clear the way for all the other horses.”

Apart from Content, who “could go to one of the Arc trials, an Arc or go to America”, O’Brien has a host of contenders for next month’s St. Leger at Doncaster and will, as always, feature heavily in the Group One juvenile races at Newmarket, Ascot and Doncaster in September and October.

Contents’ success was O’Brien’s eighth at the highest level in Britain this year. While he will struggle to equal his record of 16 Group One wins – out of a possible 36 – in 2017, his seventh British Trainers’ Championship title is all but assured with two months to go.

Content was also Galileo’s 100th individual winner at the highest level and she showed plenty of the fighting qualities he passed on to his offspring, emerging victorious after a three-way battle with Emily Upjohn and You Got To Me in the final quarter mile.

“Ryan rode her unbelievably and she’s not straightforward or easy,” O’Brien said. “She’s got a lot of speed and he’s done an incredible job of getting her relaxed … and she’s a very brave mare who will do better in a faster race.”

City Of Troy’s road to Del Mar in Southern California will likely pass through less glamorous surroundings, with O’Brien keen to give Wednesday’s exceptional International Stakes winner a gallop on an artificial turf track before he flies across the Atlantic.

“I believe he will go to one of your tracks, either Southwell or Wolverhampton as Ryan mentioned,” O’Brien said. “We just want to get him on a different surface and then it’ll go straight on (to the US).”

City Of Troy is the highest odds at 4-1 for O’Brien’s first win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 2, while Japanese challenger Forever Young, who looked an unlucky loser when finishing third in the Kentucky Derby in May, is next on the list at about 8-1.

Bank on Bradsell in Nunthorpe

Big Evs saw off Asfoora in their eagerly awaited speed duel at Goodwood three weeks ago, but the Australian-trained mare faces 6lb better weight in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes and is 2-1 favourite to reverse the form in Friday’s feature race at York.

Henry Dwyer’s mare is sturdy and reliable and has beaten most of her opponents in two starts in Britain this year. However, with the focus understandably on Asfoora and Big Evs, Bradsell (3.35), Twelve months ago, he narrowly finished third in Nunthorpe due to a tricky draw, and entered the race almost unnoticed with attractive odds.

Archie Watson’s colt won the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer and looked as good as ever after an 11-month break when winning a Listed race at Deauville this month. Unlike Big Evs, who is the furthest-drawn of all at 14, he has a handy pitch in box three and at around 7-1 he looks overpriced to give Hollie Doyle the ninth Group One win of her career.

York1.50 The 12-furlong race in this month’s Shergar Cup was run in a very strong time, with Insanity winning narrowly Dreams more intense by a head in the final half furlong. Ian Williams’ gelding is 1lb better than the winner, so it’s a surprise to see him available at around 20-1.

York2.25 Aidan O’Brien’s Point Lonsdale has enjoyed an unconventional career since the end of his juvenile season in 2021 as the leading ante-post favourite for the Derby and has often been used as a pacemaker for stablemates in Group One events. However, he is the stable’s only runner here and has a leading chance when he steps up to two miles for the first time based on his winning form at Chester in May.

York3.00 The last Gimcrack winner from Aidan O’Brien’s stable was Rock Of Gibraltar in 2001, but he has a good chance of adding his third career win in this race. Camille Pissarro. He showed great agility to finish half a length behind Babouche in a Group Three race at the Curragh last time out and the winner there continued his form impressively with a Group One win this month.

Yorke 4.10 An increase in score of 8 pounds for a two-length victory may seem a little harsh, but the form Invisible friend The win over Pol Roger – who scored a hat-trick – in June looks strong in terms of course and distance and she has the right to take part in her first race since September.
