ABILENE, Texas — A correctional officer died in the line of duty. The Texas Department of Justice announced.

Cadet Michelle Strube, 46, died Aug. 19 during routine pre-duty training at the Robertson Unit Training Center, according to TDCJ. Strube joined the agency in August 2024.

“Cadet Strube is dedicated to protecting and serving the state of Texas. There is no higher calling than that,” said Eric Nichols, chairman of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice. “Our prayers are with her family, friends and fellow academy students during this difficult time.”

According to TDCJ, preparatory training is a six-week course that all cadets complete before beginning their service as correctional officers in their assigned unit.

“TDCJ joins her family in mourning the loss of Cadet Strube, who was at the beginning of her career as a correctional officer,” said TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier. “Her dedication will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.”
