Presidents Cup 2024: History, format, teams, records and how to watch

Check out some answers to frequently asked questions about the Presidents Cup:

Presidents Cup or President’s Cup?

President’s Cup. No apostrophe.

What is the difference between the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup pits the United States against Europe. The Presidents Cup pits the United States against an “international” team, meaning all countries EXCEPT Europe. The Presidents Cup is held every two years in non-Ryder Cup years, which is 2024.

Why aren’t the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup combined?

Historical perspective aside, they are owned by different organizations. The PGA Tour hosts the Presidents Cup, while the Ryder Cup is a production of the PGA of America and R&A – and each event brings in a lot of money for its owners.

Are players paid to participate in the Presidents Cup?

Technically, no. Players do not receive any money for participating in the Presidents Cup. Instead, the PGA Tour commits to donating to charities nominated by the players, captains and vice-captains of both teams.

When did the Presidents Cup start?

The first tournament was held in 1994. This is the 15th edition.

What are the team records in the Presidents Cup?

The USA leads this one-sided match 12-1-1. The only international win came in 1998 in Australia. The two teams played a draw in South Africa in 2003.

Which players are on the 2024 Presidents Cup teams?

Each team consists of 12 players. Both have six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks for this edition. The U.S. automatic qualifiers will be determined based on points earned since January 1, 2023. The international qualifiers will be based on the Official World Golf Ranking. Both qualifying periods end on August 25, when the BMW Championship is over. The captains will announce their picks after the Tour Championship, which ends on September 1.

Who are the captains of the 2024 Presidents Cup?

Jim Furyk for the United States and Canadian Mike Weir for the international team.

Is the format the same as the Ryder Cup?

It is similar, but not an exact duplicate. The Presidents Cup is played over four days (Thursday to Sunday), with three days of team play – Alternate Shot and Better Ball – followed by singles on Sunday. The Ryder Cup is played over three days. While the Ryder Cup has a total of 28 points at stake, the Presidents Cup has 30 (previously there was a total of 34).

It will be played as follows: Day 1, five foursomes or fourballs; Day 2, five foursomes or fourballs (whichever was not played the previous day); Day 3, four fourballs and four foursomes (order to be announced); Day 4, 12 singles.

Perhaps most importantly, a tie at the end of singles matches is considered a tie and the teams share the Presidents Cup. If a Ryder Cup ends in a tie, the team that last won the Cup gets to keep it.

Where will the 2024 Presidents Cup be held?

At the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada. The 2007 Presidents Cup was also played at the Royal Montreal and was won by the USA by 19 1/2 to 14 1/2.

Who won the last Presidents Cup?

At the 2022 Quail Hollow Club, the USA won 17 1/2 to 12 1/2. The Americans built a 6-point lead after Day 1 and cruised to their ninth consecutive victory.
