Chargers sign former top prospect Zach Wilson and sign new tight end

Many positions on the LA Chargers roster have already been filled ahead of the final preseason game of the year. However, there are several areas where changes are still possible, as no player has emerged as a concrete option.

One of those areas is tight end. The first three tight ends on the roster – Will Dissly, Hayden Hurst and Donald Parham – have been decided. The fourth tight end spot, which is inevitable in a Greg Roman offense without a dedicated fullback, is still to be decided.

Stone Smartt was the favorite before training camp, but he wasn’t overly impressive. None of the undrafted free agents stood out from the rest. Recently signed TE/FB Tusker Fisk could have a chance, but it’s impossible to get his name out there in such a short amount of time.

With the fourth tight end spot on the roster still up for grabs, the Chargers have added a new name to the team looking to make an impact in the final preseason game of the year: Isaac Rex. Los Angeles signed Rex on Thursday and released Michael Mason to make room on the roster.

Rex won’t have much time to make an impression for the Chargers, as the NFL’s cut day is less than a week away. However, he will get through several practices to prove his value to the team, as well as the final preseason game of the year.

This will ultimately be the proving ground for all of these tight ends that should determine who makes the roster. With the position completely open, the fourth tight end will likely be the one who looks the best on Saturday against the Cowboys. That includes a rookie like Rex.

Rex is an interesting player because his game has some pass-catching potential. In Zach Wilson’s senior year at BYU, Rex put up impressive pass-catching statistics for a freshman. The 6’5″ tight end caught 37 balls for 429 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Rex was never able to replicate those numbers after Wilson was drafted into the NFL and his draft value dropped so much that he became a UDFA this year. He was signed by the Detroit Lions after the draft but was ultimately released.

It would be dishonest to pretend that Rex is a home run signing who will undoubtedly develop into a top-notch pass-catching tight end. However, there have been productive players from more unconventional positions in the past, so it’s not fair to rule him out completely either.

There are at least some Potential that the Chargers see in Rex’s game. Even if he doesn’t make the 53-man roster, if he builds on that potential, he could be a practice squad player who eventually gets his chance to score for the Bolts.
