Allmendinger returns to the Cup series with Kaulig

AJ Allmendinger will compete in NASCAR Cup Series competition next year, Kaulig Racing announced Thursday via its social media channels, but full details of the program were not disclosed.

Allmendinger is currently sixth in the Xfinity Series for Kaulig Racing and has won 15 races in the series as a driver for the organization since 2019. Allmendinger has made 10 starts in the Cup Series this year, driving the No. 16 Chevrolet for Matt Kaulig’s team.

It’s been an eventful few years for Allmendinger. He was released from his Cup Series race with JTG Daugherty Racing after the 2018 season after competing in the Cup Series since 2007, but then joined Kaulig for part-time racing in the Xfinity Series in 2019 and 2020, where he’s been since. That turned into full-time racing for the 2021-22 season while making five Cup Series starts.

Allmendinger won for Kaulig on the Indianapolis Road Course in 2021. It was his second career win and Kaulig’s first in the Cup Series. Last year, he won the Cup Series race with Kaulig on the Charlotte Road Course.

Kaulig Racing fields two full-time cars in the Cup Series, the Nos. 16 and 31. Daniel Hemric drove the No. 31 car full-time this year, while Allmendinger was one of several drivers who shared time in the No. 16 car.
