How to watch

Regard America’s Got Talent Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.

After AIRFOOTWORKS received the Golden Buzzer on Tuesday night, all eyes turned to the remaining 10 acts of Week 2, but from the first note of his original song “If You Were My Girl,” it was clear that Sampson’s unique blend of modern vocals and a classic ’50s rock spin was too good and original to pass up.

Now America will get at least one more song out of the artist when he competes in the semifinals alongside fellow week two winners Young Min and Sky Elements for the $1 million grand prize.

Alex Sampson’s live performance in the quarter-finals of “If You Were My Girl”

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter first caught the audience’s attention at the auditions when he belted out “Pretty Baby.” He returned in the quarterfinals with “If You Were My Girl,” a wonderful throwback to 1950s doo-wop ballads about taking good care of the girl you love.

Like most of Sampson’s music, the song is rich, nostalgic and masterfully sung by the crooner, who takes every opportunity to show off his mastery of the high notes and to offer a gentle, flirtatious smile to the camera and any captivated viewers at home.

What did the judges say about Alex Sampson?

It was Heidi Klum who first said what everyone was thinking: “Yes! I want to be your girl!”

However, she quickly corrected herself and said, “Not really, because I am very happily married. But I feel like I heard everyone in this room and all the girls at home saying the same thing. I think you really are a gem and you really dressed up beautifully and you were radiant on stage!”

Sofia Vergara agreed, calling Sampson “a star” and saying that the ’50s setting he’s playing in is “perfect” for him.

Howie Mandel also shared this opinion.

“I agree with Sofia, you are a star and you are not just a star in terms of the way you look, the way you carry yourself, the way you write and the way you perform,” he said. “You are a mix of Shawn Mendes and Chris Isaak. You will make it to the top, I know it.”

The only judge to criticise (and I use the term loosely here) was Simon Cowell, who commented that he seemed nervous and that the mood seemed “wrong” at times. However, he agreed with his fellow judges that Sampson clearly has star qualities.

“You kind of came out of nowhere and just listen to that first audition and what you did and what you’ve done right now. You’ve created a sound and a direction for yourself, which is so clever and I think our audience is going to really, really like you. I think there’s so much potential in that, I really believe that.”

America obviously thinks so, and that’s why they’ll be seeing more of Sampson throughout the rest of Season 19. AGT Competition.
